About the registry

The Navigation Protection Program Registry (the Registry) was established to notify and provide information to Canadians of proposed, current and past works on all navigable waterways by facilitating access to records related to these proposals that may impact the public right to navigation. The registry includes all works that require an approval by Transport Canada, are subject to the new resolution process, or are considered to have no interference with navigation. Thereby helping to expand the scope of federal oversight for the public right of navigation by enhancing openness, transparency and accessibility.

Transport Canada’s notification requirements for owners of work in navigable waterways will include posting information in locations, such as ,community centers, marinas, or local newspapers. These notifications will direct people to the registry for more information about the works and invite interested persons to provide written comments on the owner’s proposal within 30 days. Owners of works considered to have no interference with navigation will be required to post information as well but will not be required to entertain comments.

All content on the Registry is searchable via geo-referenced (location based) maps.

For historical purposes, limited data related to approved work (work type, location, date approved) will also be visible via the mapping tool for work approved since April 1, 2014.
