The application for approval process is mandatory on scheduled waterways and for major works, and can also be voluntary for non-scheduled waterways. The project is assessed by the Navigation Protection Program and an approval may be issued at the completion of the process.

The public resolution process allows owners of proposed works on non-scheduled waterways to create their own public notice and resolve comments by themselves.

The no interference with navigation process is used for projects having no impacts at all on the navigation of any waterway. The publication is informative only, and the public cannot comment on such projects.

The Minor Work notification process is used for projects meeting the criteria of the Minor Works Order. The publication is informative only, and the public cannot comment on such projects.
